SOAR Poetry Contest Winners – Khristona Locklear wins 1st place in student category

Robeson Community College recently held a poetry contest in honor of National Poetry Month, which is observed in April.

The celebration at RCC featured guest speaker, Azure Dee Thompson. Thompson is a graduate of Robeson Community College and a published poet. During the ceremony, Thompson read excerpts from her book The Abundance of the Heart: The Mouth Speaks.

The theme of the Spring 2024 contest was “SOAR.”

Winners were announced during the National Poetry Month Celebration held on April 23, and each winner had an opportunity to read their poem aloud. The winners each received a medal for their entry as well as a gift, which was presented to them during the ceremony.

  1. First Place Winner   -Khristona Leona Locklear—Poem Title—“Wings of Dreams”
  2. Second Place Winner- Karen Acosta Figueroa—–“Spread Our Wings”
  3. Third Place Winner-  Grace Burnette—-“Going The Extra Mile”

Faculty/Staff winners

  1. First Place Winner-  Joey Hinson—Poem Title—“Poem CDLXXVI”
  2. Second Place Winner-  Veronica Kay Freeman——-“Soar”
  3. Third Place Winner- Heather Monteiro—-“To Soar With Grace”
