Honors Program

The mission of RCC’s Honors Program is to offer academically motivated and talented students an intellectually challenging environment within a supportive and inspiring community. The Honors Program blends academic excellence and adventure, allowing students to complete advanced college transfer work while collaborating with fellow students and faculty, and serving the community.

The Honors Program invites students to take advantage of

  • A unique learning community fostering excellence
  • A competitive edge when applying to a university or a health science program
  • Opportunities for student research
  • Cultural enrichment through travel

Activities

Honors Club Meetings: Honors students are expected to regularly attend Honors Club meetings and actively participate in the club’s activities and decision making.

Service: Honors Students will participate in activities as directed by the Honors Program. For example, this might include taking a leadership role in New Student Orientation or participating in a litter sweep.

Honors Capstone: Every spring, Honors students give an oral multi-media presentation that chronicles their growth and allows them to emphasize highlights of their projects.

Students take a regularly scheduled curriculum course and propose an Honors contract with the instructor of the course. Each contract requires students to complete a significant project that entails in-depth research and a critical and/or creative thinking angle. Below are examples of Honors projects students have completed in the past:

  • Environmental Hazards in the Lumber River (CHM 152)
  • Marine Organisms and Their Biomedical Potential (CHM 151)
  • The Trickster Figure in American Religion (REL 221)
  • Matrilineal Family Structure in Native American Tribes (SOC 213)
  • Population Growth in Bacteria Samples (MAT 271)
  • Women in Film (ENG 112)
  • Social and Psychological Factors that Influence the Development of a Conscience (PSY 241)
Transfers

Students earning Honors credits at Robeson Community College may transfer credits to other Honors programs and colleges. We currently have Memoranda of Understanding with the following universities:

In addition, Honors students from RCC have been accepted into Honors programs and colleges at UNC and NCSU.

Requirements

To be eligible for the Honors Program, students must be enrolled in an Associates Degree program by the time they begin Honors studies. They must have completed all pre-college/developmental course work in Math and English. The minimum GPA requirement is 3.25 for new as well as current students. For new students, we look at the cumulative unweighted high school GPA. For current students, we look at the cumulative GPA of their curriculum courses.

In order to remain in the Honors Program, students must maintain a minimum 3.0 program GPA in their first year and a minimum 3.25 program GPA in their second year. In addition, students are expected to participate actively in the Honors Program as well as meet all deadlines.

In order to graduate with Honors, students are required to complete 4 Honors projects in different curriculum courses. These courses fulfill both Honors as well as AA/AS/AAS program requirements (ACA does not count towards this minimum).

Who Can Apply

High school seniors: High school seniors can apply while still in their senior year of high school. Acceptance into the program is contingent upon the GPA at the time of completion.

Current students: Current students who wish to be considered for acceptance into Honors should have completed at least 12 hours in their degree program by the time they begin Honors studies. If, at the time of application, those courses are still in progress, acceptance into the program is contingent upon the GPA at the time of completion.

New students: New students who earned their high school diploma or GED more than two years ago fall under the policy for current students.

CCP students: We will consider applications from CCP students with an unweighted high school GPA of 3.25 or higher or an RCC GPA of 3.25 or higher.

Early College students: We will consider applications from Early College students to begin Honors in the Spring of their Junior year. Most Early College Honors students participate in their last 2 years at RCC.

Application

E-mail Honors@robeson.edu for access to the Honors page on Open LMS.  Once you have access, please review the Honors Student Handbook and upload your student evaluation (EVAL)  or high school transcript.  There will be an Honors Acknowledgement Quiz which includes a brief essay that is described on the Honors Application.  Materials will be reviewed monthly for acceptance into the program.
