The Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Training Academy at Robeson Community College is a comprehensive program designed to prepare individuals for entry-level employment as tractor-trailer drivers. The course provides in-depth instruction in the operation of commercial motor vehicles with a focus on safety, compliance, and practical driving skills.
Students will learn essential topics including commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations, safe driving techniques, defensive driving strategies, freight handling, security procedures, fire protection, vehicle maintenance, daily log requirements, and map reading for trip planning.
Training is delivered through a combination of classroom instruction, online learning modules, closed-course range exercises, and supervised highway driving. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on experience to ensure students gain the confidence and competence required to operate commercial vehicles safely and efficiently.
Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the NC Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Skills Exam.
Requirements
To enroll in the Class A CDL Program, students must:
Be 18 years of age or older at the time of registration
Have a valid North Carolina driver’s license and Social Security card
Submit full payment of $682.60 at the time of registration
Attend the mandatory orientation scheduled for your class session
Disqualifying Violations (Within the Last 5 Years)
Applicants will not be admitted to the program if convicted of any of the following offenses within the past five (5) years:
DUI/DWI
Leaving the scene of an accident
Felony drug possession
Careless and reckless driving
License suspension
Refusal to take a chemical test
More than three (3) moving violations
Age Restriction Notice
Students who are 18 to 20 years old are subject to the age-based limitations outlined in:
49 CFR Part 391.11
G.S. 20-317.13
FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations
These may limit certain driving opportunities (e.g., interstate or hazardous materials transport).
CDL Day Academy Program
Program Format:
Technology Requirement: Students must have access to a computer, laptop, or tablet for online coursework
Duration: 10 weeks (480 hours)
Schedule: Daytime classes;(M-Th) subject to change due to inclement weather
CDL Night Academy Program
Program Format:
Technology Requirement: Students must have access to a computer, laptop, or tablet for online coursework
Duration: 20 weeks (480 hours)
Schedule: Night classes;(M,Th) subject to change due to inclement weather

Already Have a Class B CDL? Ready to Upgrade to a Class A?
Our CDL Class A Upgrade Program is designed specifically for drivers who currently hold a Class B CDL and want to advance their careers by upgrading to a Class A license.
Through this program, you’ll learn:
Proper tractor-trailer driving procedures
Safe driving responsibilities
Federal and state CMV laws and regulations
Basic operating principles for commercial vehicles
Access to a computer, laptop, or tablet is required for course completion.
Upon successful completion, you will:
Be eligible to take the Class A Commercial Driver’s License Exam
Meet all Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements
Take your final CDL licensing exam on-site, administered by our licensed examiners
Take the next step toward expanding your driving opportunities—upgrade to Class A with confidence!
Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Be at least 18 years of age at the time of registration.
Hold a valid Class B Driver’s License and possess a Social Security card.
Obtain a valid Class A Learner’s Permit prior to registration.
Have a current DOT Physical.
Submit full payment of $682.60 at the time of registration.

Dump Truck or Activity Bus?
A Class B CDL is required to operate:
A single vehicle with a GVWR over 26,001 pounds
A trailer not exceeding 10,000 pounds
Vehicles designed to transport 24 or more passengers, including the driver
Our CDL Academy offers:
Extensive range and road driving practice
Combined classroom instruction and online coursework
Full preparation for the Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) skills exam.
At the conclusion of the program, you’ll complete your licensing on-site with our licensed examiners by taking the official Class B CDL test.
Requirements
To be eligible for enrollment in the Class B CDL Program, students must meet the following criteria:

Have a current DOT Physical

Post-Registration Requirement
After completing registration, students are required to schedule an appointment with the Program Coordinator at least 5 days prior to the first day of class.
Prepare to earn your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with our CDL Permit Prep course. This self-paced online course is designed to help students build a strong foundation in commercial driving knowledge and successfully pass the written exams required to obtain a Class A or Class B permit.
Course Topics Include:
General Knowledge
Air Brakes
Combination Vehicles (required for Class A)
Upon successful completion, students will be well-prepared to pass the North Carolina DMV CDL Permit Exam.

Offered online only
Self-paced, 24-hour course
Includes access to practice tests and study materials
Covers permit application guidance and testing tips
This course is ideal for individuals new to commercial driving or those needing a refresher before testing.
Requirements & Cost
To enroll in the CDL Permit Prep course, students must meet the following criteria:
Be 18 years of age or older by the first-class meeting date
Have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License
Complete registration and submit full payment of $72.00 prior to the course start date
Log in on the first day of class — failure to do so will result in ineligibility for a refund
Complete 100% of the course contact hours (24 hours) to receive credit for completion
Course Format: This course is offered online only and is self-paced. Total course time is 24 hours.
Important: Be sure you’re ready to commit to the full course in order to gain the most benefit and be prepared for DMV permit testing.
