The Utility Fundamentals Program is built around real-world outage and plant-support operations, delivering an intensive, hands-on curriculum that reflects how utility and industrial teams function in the field. Students begin by earning essential safety credentials, including OSHA-10 and CPR/First Aid, before progressing into core technical competencies such as tool control, precision measurement, mechanical fundamentals, rigging, lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical and instrumentation basics, 4–20 mA systems, and introductory PLCs and industrial controls.

In addition to technical skills, students develop critical workplace competencies, including conducting effective job briefings, reading and interpreting prints, completing required documentation, and performing quality checks in accordance with industry standards.

Training is conducted using industrial equipment commonly found on active job sites, including valves, rigging systems, panel and instrumentation trainers, and modern drives and controls. This ensures graduates are prepared to transition directly into the workforce with practical, job-ready experience. The curriculum also aligns with Robeson Community College’s Mechatronics program, providing a clear pathway for students seeking to advance their technical education.

Designed in collaboration with employer partners, the program addresses current workforce needs by preparing reliable, entry-level technicians who can follow procedures, communicate effectively, and adapt to the fast-paced demands of outage and plant environments. For regional industries—such as power generation, fabrication, processing, and packaging—the Utility Fundamentals Program provides a streamlined talent pipeline that reduces onboarding time while minimizing training risk.
