Trauma Rodeo to be held November 10 at RCC

A ‘trauma rodeo’ will take place on November 10 at Robeson Community College from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event will incorporate most of the health sciences disciplines at the college – from ADN (associate degree nursing) to EMT (emergency medical technician) to radiography – as they participate in a campus-wide simulation where various trauma scenarios are set up across the campus.

The RCC EMS programs will operate ambulances and “transport” patients to the simulated hospital located in the nursing classrooms of Building 17. The ADN, Practical Nursing, respiratory therapy, and radiography students will then take the patient and assist in determining the medical needs for that individual.

“All students will be able to experience a realistic emergency from the critical moments immediately after a trauma occurs,” said Brad Lawson, the EMS coordinator for continuing education at RCC. “We try to enact as close to a real-life scenario for our students so they can be prepared when they enter the workforce.”

The physician residency program with UNC Southeastern Hospital, as well as multiple agencies from the community, including the Lumberton Fire Department, Lumberton Police Department will also be participating in this event.

The college anticipates several medical helicopters from around the region will be taking part in the event as well, which will land on our campus to transport and deliver patients.

This event is held annually at the college but had to be cancelled in recent years due to COVID.
