COURSE DESCRIPTION

Robeson Community College’s CDL Training Academy is designed to prepare individuals to drive tractor-trailers. This program teaches proper driving procedures, safe driver responsibility, commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations, and the basic principles and practices for operating commercial vehicles. The coursework includes motor vehicle laws and regulations, map reading, vehicle maintenance, safety procedures, daily logs, defensive driving, freight handling, security, and fire protection. Highway driving, training range exercises, and classroom lectures are used to develop the student’s knowledge and skills. Graduates of the curriculum are qualified to take the Commercial Driver’s License Exam.

The day academy is a  (10) week course. Inclement weather may affect the daily schedule. The class is 400 hours with approximately 60% of class time spent on the range and approximately 40% in the classroom including online learning. Students will need access to a computer, laptop or tablet to complete the course.

The night academy is a (20) week course. Inclement weather may affect the nightly schedule. REQUIREMENTS
-18 years of age at time of registration
-Have a valid North Carolina driver’s license AND social security card

VIOLATIONS THAT PROHIBIT ENTRY TO THE PROGRAM IF CONVICTED WITHIN THE LAST FIVE (5) YEARS
-DUI/DWI -Leaving the scene of an accident
-Felony drug possession charge -Careless and reckless
-License Suspension -More than three (3) moving violations
-Refusal to take a chemical test

**Please be advised that students who are 18 years or older but less than 21 years of age are limited to the age restrictions set forth in 49 CFR Part 391.11 and limitations established by the United States Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and G.S. 20-317.13.

REGISTRATION

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is open until the class meets maximum capacity. Your registration is not considered complete until your bill is paid in full.  Students can register:

*If items due by week 3 are not submitted by week 3, the student will not be able to continue the course.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY — BASIC RIDER COURSE                                $160.00

Preregistration is required as class size is limited and fills very quickly!  To register call Julie Locklear at 910.272.3630

The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is designed for the student with little or no motorcycle riding experience. Upon successful completion of this 20 hour safety and street skills course, students will be given cards to take to their local DMV office. Upon successful completion of the written examination at the DMV office, students will receive a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license. Motorcycles are provided by the college, however the student is responsible for the protective gear required to participate in this course.

The Basic Rider Course has been updated and now includes an eCourse (online) that is a prerequisite for the riding exercises. The eCourse will be conducted during Friday night’s class. You must pass the eCourse (a certificate of completion will be received) in order to participate in the riding portion on Saturday and Sunday. MSF requires all students to satisfactorily complete the eCourse in order to participate in the riding portion of the class. Failure to satisfactorily complete eCourse before your scheduled Saturday morning class will result in forfeiture of your registration fee and a grade of incomplete. Students will need an e-mail address before beginning class on Friday night.

Note: The North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program requires 100% attendance. You must be in attendance at 5:30 pm when the first class begins. Failure to be on time will result in your slot being denied.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!   This course is Self-Supporting which means that your tuition fee will not be refunded if you fail to show up for class, or if you fail to complete the course.  Refunds may be requested provided the College is given at least 48 hours notice prior to the start of the class.

This 4-week program is for those who have a valid CLP ( Commercial Learners Permit). It includes the pre-trip inspection, range and road driving portions of the Truck Driver Training Program.

Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) theory is required to obtain a commercial driver’s license. (Verification of completed ELDT theory portion will be required before acceptance) Experience with manual transmissions (clutch and shifting gears) and towing is highly recommended as this course is designed to hone limited or basic skills. The program coordinator will need verification of driving skills before acceptance into 4 week program.
