Robeson Community College

Security Guard Classes Coming to RCC

Robeson Community College will be offering the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board (PPSB) Training, which consists of two courses: Basic Unarmed Security Officer Training and Armed Guard Training.

Basic Unarmed Security Officer Training will be offered on June 17 and June 18 from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This 16-hour training is required for candidates that wish to be an unarmed security guard in North Carolina. Minimum standards for becoming an unarmed guard include being at least 18 years of age, a citizen of the United States or a Resident Alien with a valid ID card, and be of good moral character and temperate habits. Participants are asked to bring a pencil, highlighter, and notepad to the course.

Candidates who successfully pass the unarmed security officer training, and are 21 years of age or older, can then proceed to take the Armed Guard Training on June 19 and June 20 from 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. This 20-hour training covers basic shooting fundamentals and requires students to show a shooting proficiency by qualifying on a timed course of fire ranging from 3 yards to 25 yards with a minimum score of 80%.

“This is our first time offering these classes,” said Lee Hinson, the director for the law enforcement continuing education program. “There is a need in the community for these types of classes because you see all kinds of job postings for security officers at various plants, so wanted to do something to benefit the public in offering training for these types of jobs.”

According to Indeed.com, unarmed security guards in Robeson County can make between $9.50 – $13.00 per hour, whereas armed guards can make an estimated $14.50 per hour, depending upon experience.

The security training classes are open to the public. The cost of the basic unarmed guard course is $72 and the cost for the armed guard training is $72.60.

“Our plan is to offer this course on a continuous basis if we get a good response.”

The training will take place at RCC’s Emergency Services Training Grounds located at 5825 South Roberts Avenue, Lumberton, NC 28358.

To register, participants are asked to contact Charles Cochran at ccochran@robeson.edu or (910) 272-3502. For more information, please visit https://www.robeson.edu/specialized-training-classes.
