RCC to celebrate Mental Health Day October 24 with mental health screenings, paraffin hand dips, yoga, and more!

Officials at Robeson Community College have a message they want you to hear – there is nothing wrong with taking care of yourself and your mental health.

“It’s ok to ask for help,” stated Susan Moore, a counselor at RCC. “That’s why we are celebrating Mental Health Day on October 24th because we want to remove the stigma and let people know there are resources available.”

Moore hopes the event will help raise awareness of mental health resources in the county, which she says is often available for free.

“If a student is not comfortable seeking help on campus, we can refer them to agencies in the county,” said Moore. “Mental health is very important and there are many avenues available.”

The event will offer free mental health screenings from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and free paraffin hand dips from the cosmetology department from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. A Veteran’s Counselor will be available in the Military Affiliated Resource Center and there will be food trucks and a specialty coffee truck set up on campus as well from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Representatives from Substance Use and Recover, Counseling and other resource vendors will also be available during this time.

“We’ll also be offering ‘Yoga Sessions on the Yard’ every thirty minutes from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.,” Moore stated.

“Yoga is another way to release anxiety and calm down,” Moore continued. “I would love to see people participate in this; this service is being offered free from the instructor and it’s just a great opportunity for our students and anyone else that wants to learn some techniques to de-stress and relax.”

Those attending will also have a chance to enter into a drawing to win a pair of tickets to the Carolina Panthers Home Game, as well as other door prizes, making Robeson Community College the place to be on October 24.

“I just want folks to know how important they are and to know we care,” stated Moore. “Our doors are always open and we are here for them, for whatever it may be.”

This free event is sponsored by SHOP – Students Helping Other People – a student club at Robeson Community College.
