RCC observes October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month

If you have driven onto the campus of Robeson Community College this month, you may have noticed the large pink bows on display. The pink bows are wrapped around the large trees along the front entrance, as Sherry Lofton, an English instructor at RCC, says, “to remind everyone that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”

The pink bows were placed by members of the Cultural Events Committee, which Lofton chairs, and members of the English department.

“It’s just one way to show that the college is trying to bring awareness about breast cancer,” said Lofton. “Many of us have been affected by it or know someone who has.”

According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that 284,200 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year, and more than 44,130 individuals will lose their life to this disease in 2021. Of those cases, it is estimated that 2,650 men will be diagnosed and that more than 500 men will die from breast cancer this year alone.

“This terrible disease doesn’t discriminate among cultures, genders, or racial backgrounds,” said Lofton.

The Cultural Events Committee will also be holding a contest for faculty, staff, and students to raise awareness throughout the campus community. Students are encouraged to check their RCC student email account for details.
