More than a dozen inducted into RCC’s PTK chapter

More than a dozen students at Robeson Community College were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society this week. Known as PTK, the honor society recognizes academic success of students attending two-year institutions.

In order to be admitted into PTK, students must complete at least 12 semester hours of college-level coursework, earn a minimum of 3.5 GPA, and maintain a good standing with the college.

“These students have exemplified these qualifications and have accomplished these goals,” stated PTK advisor Donte McDowell. “Today, we celebrate our newest members and give them the pledge today of being inducted into Phi Theta Kappa…We appreciate that you are modeling wisdom and you are modeling strength.”

During the ceremony, students had an opportunity to hear from Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Johnny Smith, who served as the guest speaker of the event and brought a few words of encouragement.

“We want to congratulate you on a job well done,” said Smith.

“I want to share with you three things that this group has done, three keys to success,” Smith told the guests who had gathered to watch the ceremony. “The first thing is to have a good attitude…. I bring my own weather, even when it’s raining outside, I’m sunny on the inside…. When you have that positive attitude, people want to help you.”

“Next is hard work,” Smith said. “I learned the value of hard work growing up, and I know that is what these inductees have done… to have a minimum of 3.5 GPA, you certainly have to have a serious work ethic.”

“And last, but not least, is determination,” stated Smith.  “Life happens, doesn’t it? Sometimes things come up, sometimes life happens, but what we have to do is figure out a way to persevere and overcome those challenges, and I know that is what these inductees have done.”

One by one, the inductees were called to receive a graduation stole and a rose.

Tina Chavis, Irving Garcia, Maya Justice, Alisha Jacobs, Gregory Jacobs, Deborah Martin, Christian McArthur, Kimberly McMillan, Alexis Ortiz-Rosales, Kasey Oxendine, Sarah Santillan-Nieves, Regina Walters, and Charles Wester accepted the pledge of PTK and were inducted into the prestigious honor society.

“I am pleased to present to you these candidates for membership into our honor society,” stated PTK advisor Jim Brisson. “These students have fulfilled all requirements for membership and have been selected because they have chosen scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.”
