Moore to present on test anxiety strategies at NCCCS Conference

Susan Mangum Moore, a counselor and coordinator the disability services at Robeson Community College, recently received an invitation to present at the North Carolina Community College System Conference in October.

The conference is held annually at the Raleigh Convention Center. This year’s conference will take place from October 9 – October 11 and is an opportunity for personnel from across the state to share best practices in student success and retention, discuss initiatives and programs that break down barriers for students, and network and learn from colleagues through concurrent and roundtable sessions. The event usually draws thousands of educators from North Carolina and across the country.

“I’m very excited to know I am going to be representing our school,” said Susan. “I was a bit surprised…”

Susan’s presentation will be centered around a poster she designed that focuses on test anxiety strategies.

“They had different categories to submit,” said Susan. “I didn’t know what they were looking for… I chose student access and success.”

The poster is designed for just that.

“It gives students simple and direct methods and reinforces what they may have already heard,” Susan stated.

According to Susan, 38% of students have moderate to severe test anxiety and that 31% of students experience stress during mid-terms and exams.

“A lot of students do not know how to study, and this causes initial anxiety with test taking,” said Susan. “I have some students that come in shaking before taking a test. We discuss “deep belly breathing” to alleviate some of that stress immediately. I want to see students succeed, that is why there are numerous methods to try. I tell students to keep searching until they find the right combination that works for them.”

Susan’s presentation will be one of many breakout sessions that conference goers can choose to attend. She is scheduled to give her presentation on Sunday, October 9.
