Basic Law Enforcement

2025 Fall Day Academy Dates: 08/18/2025 – 01/XX/2026

Spring Day Academy Packets are due by August 1, 2025, at 2 pm.

Fall Day Academy Mandatory Orientation is on July 21, 2025, from 8:30 am to 2 pm

The first step in the enrollment process is to complete the Reading Comprehension Exam. All BLET applicants must read at the tenth-grade level or higher. To schedule the reading exam, please call (910) 272-3641.  The exams are offered in building 14, room 1427A, near the elevator.

You must have an appointment.  There is no cost associated with the exam. Examiners ask that you arrive ten minutes early and bring picture identification. Once you complete the exam, you will be provided with a copy of your results. The test is a two-part process that takes approximately one and a half hours. Bring those results to the faculty offices in building 11 and turn them into Mr. Bruce Meares.

Next, the applicant can obtain a Basic Law Enforcement Training information enrollment packet from the Law Enforcement Training Center located on the Main Campus, Building 11, Faculty Offices. 

The Reading Test is administered as follows: 

• RCC Campus, Building 14 – room 1427A

• The test is approximately 45 minutes to complete

Prior to enrollment, each student must:

• Be sponsored or employed by a North Carolina Public Law Enforcement Agency and maintain that sponsorship or employment throughout the course.
• Must meet minimum standards for employment as established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission and/or the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education Training and Standards Commission as outlined in the North Carolina Administrative Code.
• Must provide true and accurate information concerning his or her criminal background. Any information provided by the candidate that is determined to be false or inaccurate will be grounds to deny entry, drop enrollment, or invoke sanctions under the Student Rules of Conduct.
• Provide the school director with evidence if the student has ever been charged or convicted of any crime, civilian or military.
• Provide the school director with a criminal records check from the clerk of courts’ office in each county and state of residence since the student became sixteen (16) years of age. This also applies to all times in which the candidate served in the U.S. Military Service.
• Candidates cannot have any felony or major misdemeanor convictions.
• Candidates must have taken the reading component of a nationally standardized test within one year prior to admission and have scored at or above the tenth-grade level or the equivalent.
• Must be twenty (20) years of age on the day of the final State Comprehensive Exam.
• Provide the school director with a current state-mandated medical questionnaire and medical examination report.
• Must be a high school graduate or have passed the General Educational Development (GED) test. Correspondence diplomas are not accepted. High school certificates are not accepted. Diplomas reflecting that the person has accomplished some, but not all, graduation requirements are not sufficient to satisfy this requirement.
• Possess a valid Driver’s License.
• Must be a United States citizen.

How long does DAY BLET last?

The day academy is a full-time and lasts approximately 22 weeks. Classes normally run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with extended weekend and night training in firearms, patrol techniques, and driver training at the discretion of the BLET School Director.  Physical Fitness Training is from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. at least three (3) days a week. 

Students may receive 20 credit hours toward their associate degree at Robeson Community College upon completion of the academy.

How difficult / demanding is BLET?

Cadets participate in a demanding but obtainable program consisting of physical activities, preparing them for a challenging career in law enforcement.  Physical fitness activities include running, weight training, and group exercises.  The weekly academic tests are administered to determine proficiency and in preparation for the comprehensive State exam.  

After graduating from BLET and passing the State Exam, does this certification last indefinitely?

No. Graduates must be hired or “sworn in” by a law enforcement agency within 12 months from the date of the state exam.

What is the cost of taking the BLET program?

Upon receiving the required sponsorship from an accredited law enforcement agency, tuition is waived for attending the academy. The student is responsible for books, a physical examination, all required uniforms, and costs associated with the application process. Students attending BLET at Robeson Community College are eligible for Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Foundation assistance.
