Basic Street Gang Investigator Training to be held at RCC

Robeson Community College in partnership with the North Carolina Gang Investigators’ Association will present a free, three-day course in Basic Street Gang Investigator Training for sworn law enforcement officers.

This training will provide basic, entry-level training for those who are assigned to work with street gangs. Instruction on how to recognize and identify gang members and gang insignia; ways to develop sources of information about gang activities within the community; and multijurisdictional approaches to gang investigations.

“Approximately 75% of inmates within the prison system of North Carolina are affiliated with a gang,” said Lee Hinson, director of law enforcement training at RCC. “This course will help our officers better identify gang members and collect intelligence, as needed, to solve crimes.”

Training will be offered at no cost to sworn law enforcement officers from North Carolina. The training is geared towards officers, investigators, detectives, and agents that have limited experience, but little formal training in street gang investigations. Officers from detention and correctional facilities are also invited to attend, as well as assistant district attorneys who deal with cases involving gang related crimes.

“For our detention and correctional officers, this course will help them identify those incarcerated gang members who were not properly identified prior to entering the prison system, said Hinson. “This will assist in separating inmates and hopefully prevent violence within the prison by preventing gangs of the same affiliation from gathering together.”

The class will take place October 27 through October 29 in Building 18 on the main campus of RCC. Individuals interested in the training can register by contacting Pete Monteiro at 910-272-3502 or pmonteiro@robeson.edu.
