Joshua Hunt elected as RCC’s SGA President for 2025
Baking and Pastry Arts student Joshua Hunt is the newly elected President of the Student Government Association at Robeson Community College.
Through this new role, Hunt says he hopes to be able to make a difference.
“I ran because I felt like it was the perfect fit because I am still young and I’m an adult learner, versus traditional students who come to college right after high school, so I feel like students will be able to relate to me,” Hunt stated.
One of his primary goals is to increase communication across campus.
“That’s my first goal,” Hunt said. “I want to get the phone numbers of all the higher-ups and form better communication between them and SGA.”
“My job I feel like is to share communication about events so that no one at RCC is left out,” Hunt adds. “I want to be here for students, staff, and faculty.”
Hunt says he also hopes to do some recruiting at the high school he graduated from – Purnell Swett.
“I am planning to go to Purnell and share information on sports and classes,” Hunt said. “Hopefully, we can get some students to come out, and register, and we’ll just see where all that goes, but the more people know, the better.”
As a student himself, Hunt says that he’s fallen in love with Robeson Community College and how he has been able to create a path for himself.
“I have learning disabilities,” Hunt said. “My skills are at a different level, it’s where people see things differently and comprehend things differently, it takes longer for me to understand things than others.”
“But RCC has helped me to adjust, and they have offered accommodations, this is like my family home and that’s what I call it,” Hunt said. “I get to meet people, make friends, and I feel as if it really does feel like home…. SGA is giving me a chance to be President, I got the votes as well as the support of the Vice President, and I’m just so happy to be a part of all this.”
As Hunt learns more about his duties and responsibilities as SGA President, he continues to learn more about his major – Baking and Pastry Arts.
“I always loved baking when I was little with my Mom,” Hunt said. “My Mom taught the box method, but I wanted to learn how to bake from scratch.”
Although he doesn’t see owning a bakery in his future at this point, Hunt says he hopes to be able to get a better paying job with his degree and find a job that he will love going to everyday.
“With having learning disabilities, it’s hard, but I feel like I could be good at baking, selling it, advertising, or something like that,” Hunt adds. “Baking is love.”
Joining Hunt on the Student Government Association are Shannon Cimiano who will serve as Vice President; Brianna Hammonds who was elected as the Secretary (PIO); Andrew McQuhae who act as the Treasurer; Justin Velasquez, the Parliamentarian; and Debora De Jesus Perez who will serve as the liaison for the organization.
