RCC hosts 3rd Annual Native American Heritage Month Celebration on Nov. 2

“Resilient and Enduring – We are still here.”

That’s the message organizers of Robeson Community College’s 3rd Annual Native American Heritage Month Celebration hope to get across to those attending the cultural exhibition.  The event will take place tomorrow, November 2nd from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the center lawn of campus, between Buildings 13 and Building 17 in Lumberton.

Ashley Lomboy, the global information security manager for Corning Optical Fiber and Cable will serve as the guest speaker for the event, speaking on the Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio.

The cultural exhibition will also feature song and dance, special entertainment and powwow with Lumbee Ambassadors, Native American storytelling, a ceremonial blessing and land acknowledgement, and the presentation of flags and colors by the Lumbee Warriors.

To date, more than 20 vendors are expected to be in attendance, 15 of which are specialty craft vendors specializing in Native American design, jewelry or clothing. Food vendors will also be set up on campus, many of which will feature Native American Cuisine on their menus.

“We hope that everyone in our community will come out and attend this year’s event,” stated Dr. Johnny Smith, the chief academic officer for RCC. “There is no cost, the admission is free and we will have seating available.”

The celebration is open to the public and all are welcome to attend. In addition to students, faculty, staff and community members, many school children from across the region are also expected to be in attendance.

This event is sponsored by the RCC FAPSS Grant, which stands for First American Pathways to STEM success.
