Robeson Community College Honors the 24th Anniversary of 9/11
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 11, 2025
LUMBERTON, NC – Robeson Community College held its 24th Anniversary 9/11 Ceremony this morning, Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. in front of the Law Enforcement Training Center. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community gathered to pause, reflect, honor, and remember the victims, survivors, and first responders of the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
Executive Vice President Eric Freeman began the ceremony with a heartfelt welcome, expressing gratitude to all in attendance for taking time to honor the lives lost and the heroes who answered the call that day. The ceremony then continued with an opening invocation delivered by Pastor Adam Self of Zions Tabernacle Church, setting a tone of reverence and unity.
The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard presented the Colors, offered a 21-Gun Salute, and played TAPS in remembrance of the lives lost. The audience then stood in honor as Miss Lumbee Taylor Davis gave a moving rendition of the National Anthem, followed by the heartfelt recitation of an original poem titled “Fallen, Not Forgotten” by RCC’s Student Poetry Contest Winner Vedika Zope.
Mr. Steve West, Director of Fire Service for RCC introduced the guest speaker, Scott Phillips, EMS Supervisor for Cape Fear Valley Medical, who shared powerful words about resilience, service, and remembrance. Reflecting on his own experiences, Phillips spoke about his visits to several significant locations in New York since 9/11, including FDNY Ladder 4/Engine 54, FDNY Rescue 3, and FDNY Ten House, where the bravery and sacrifice of first responders is deeply honored.
Addressing current and future members of public safety fields, Phillips offered words of encouragement and purpose. “For those who choose to serve in law enforcement, EMS, or the fire service, know this: there is no greater calling than to serve another,” Phillips stated. “Your commitment to protect and care for others is what makes you a true hero in our communities.”
Robeson Community College is proud to honor the courage and sacrifice of all those who responded that day and to recognize the many first responders who continue to serve with bravery and compassion in our communities today. Events such as this are a vital reminder to never forget the heroes of September 11 and to continue supporting those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
May we always remember their sacrifice, honor their legacy, and carry their spirit forward in our hearts.
