The Service Industries Department at Robeson Community College offers classes to prepare students for jobs in the service industry sector. The service industry sector is an important part of any growing economy. The talented individuals who make up this sector provide valuable services and nonmaterial goods. Service Industries are an important part of society due to their ability to create positive experiences that provide emotional value and promote the well-being of those they serve. This course is designed to provide the necessary skills to work to meet the instructional requirements to become a registered barber established by the NC Board of Barber Examiners.  

With the support of RCC, you will be prepared to take the state exam and get started in your barbering career. The program is located at our Comtech Campus and is currently accepting applications. 

Students will train in an on-campus barbershop located at RCC’s Comtech Campus in Pembroke. The barber program will teach the students the essentials required in providing complete hair and skin services, such as facial massages, razor shaves, modern hairstyling, haircutting, coloring, and chemical services.

This comprehensive course provides instruction and hands-on practice in the concepts and techniques of Esthetics.  Topics include safety, skin care, make-up, and other required topics. Graduates should be prepared to take the North Carolina Cosmetology State Board Licensing Exam and, upon passing, be licensed and qualify for employment in beauty and cosmetic/skin care salons, as a platform artist, and in related businesses.

This comprehensive course provides instruction and clinical practice in manicuring, nail building (application and maintenance of artificial nails), and pedicuring.  The course content includes nail anatomy, disorders of nails, and irregularities of nails; theory and salesmanship as it relates to manicuring; actual practice in manicuring; and arm, hand, and foot massage.

Natural Hair Care Specialist is a 360-hour course designed to teach how to care for natural hair without the use of chemicals such as perms/relaxers and hair color. The style techniques include braiding, twisting, wrapping, extending, and locking natural hair. The coursework also includes teaching the proper health, safety, and sanitation procedures to avoid spreading infections. The students will be able to apply their skills to clients who visit the clinic. After successfully completing the course, the students will be able to sit for the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts’ exam to become a licensed Natural Hair Care Specialist.

The Continuing Education Cosmetology course includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics. Graduates will qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses.

Medical Billing & Coding – The Medical Billing and Coding program prepares students for entry-level employment in medical billing and coding, patient encounters, scheduling appointments, handling patient files and other medical office business procedures in physicians’ offices, hospitals, insurance companies and a variety of settings. Program courses provide training in medical terminology, medical billing and coding concepts, and healthcare computer information systems. Students are introduced to coding healthcare services, electronic health records systems and processes for preparing and submitting of healthcare claims. Students are equipped to code diseases, surgeries and medical procedures for billing and collection utilizing ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding systems, to organize, analyze, and technically examine health insurance claims for reimbursement and rejected claims for resubmission. Students will explore HIPAA rules and regulations related to the privacy and security of patient information. Upon completion, the student will have the knowledge to sit for industry-recognized certifications.

Medical Administrative Assistant – The focus of the Medical Administrative Assistant program is to prepare students for entry-level employment as medical office receptionists, medical billing clerks, medical records clerks and other administrative positions in a variety of settings. Through the program, students gain knowledge of medical terminology, general medical office procedures and acquire the skills necessary to deliver effective customer service and perform important administrative duties. Courses are designed to equip students with the skills needed to perform medical transcription and develop and maintain patient files and records. Additionally, students become familiar with basic procedural and diagnostic coding systems and processes, medical records management, coding applications, reimbursement, medical ethics and compliance and HIPAA rules and regulations related to the privacy and security of patient information. Upon completion, the student will have the knowledge to sit for industry-recognized certifications.
