What is Verification?
Verification is a process used by the US Department of Education to ensure the accuracy of information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some applications may be selected randomly, while others are selected based on a common set of data elements that are prone to error, which appear unusual or which seem inconsistent. Financial Aid Administrators may ask for documentation they deem necessary to complete the verification process. In some cases, data submitted is compared to information at other agencies such as the Social Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Veteran’s Affairs, etc. to verify accuracy. All requested information is submitted to the US Department of Education. Federal student aid cannot be awarded or disbursed to a student until the verification process is completed.
How do I know if I’ve been selected for Verification?
A Student Aid Report (SAR) will be sent to students via email and/or mail several days after your FAFSA is submitted online. The SAR will notify students if they have been selected. Furthermore, the Financial Aid Office from schools listed on the FAFSA will contact students informing them of verification selection and requesting additional documentation if necessary.
What do I do if I’ve been selected for Verification?
It is important to submit all documentation requested by the Financial Aid Office in a timely manner. Submitting information quickly will ensure faster verification processing.
Completion of the Verification Process
Verification is complete when the student received one or more of the following:
- A financial aid award letter
- A letter informing the student of and explaining ineligibility of financial aid
- A new Student Aid Report (SAR) indicating change(s) made as a result of the verification process. Please review the new SAR for accuracy.
All requested documents must be on file in the Financial Aid Office at Robeson Community College and all necessary corrections must be on file with the Department of Education for the verification process to be complete.
