TLC – Tutoring


Tutoring Services Policy/Guidelines

The Learning Center (TLC) offers individual and/or group tutoring in a variety of subjects. Please contact The Learning Center for tutor availability and scheduling.

Requesting a tutor:

  • Tutoring appointments are made by 1) Referral from a faculty member or 2) By visiting The Learning Center to make an appointment. (Before requesting a tutor, students should contact their instructor first for help, and then ask the instructor to sign a Tutoring Referral Form if they need to visit TLC).
  • Students referred by a professor should bring their completed Tutoring Referral Form to The Learning Center.
  • Students visiting The Learning Center without a faculty referral should complete an application, and schedule an appointment with the TLC Staff in order to get set up with a tutor. (Walk-ins are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.Please allow 24 to 48 hours to hear back from TLC concerning an appointment time).
  • Scheduling of tutoring is based on tutor availability. TLC does not guarantee requests for specific tutors.
  • The Learning Center is not obligated to make tutoring available for a student for the entire semester if the student has mastered the concepts for which they requested tutoring. It is o.k. to request additional tutoring, and those students may be placed with different tutors if necessary.
  • Do not wait until the last minute to make an appointment or ask for help. Tutoring requests should be made 2-3 days in advance.
  • To cancel an appointment, or if you will be late, contact The Learning Center before your scheduled time (preferably within 24 hours). Tutors will wait for 15 minutes for late appointments. After 15 minutes, it is the tutor’s decision whether or not to continue with the meeting. Students who fail to show for an appointment two times may lose tutoring privileges for the remainder of the semester.

What To Expect From A Tutoring Session

  • Sessions are typically about one hour, but they can be longer or shorter if scheduled ahead of time. Tutoring sessions may not go past the scheduled time if other students are waiting to meet with the tutor.
  • Tutoring sessions do not replace class instruction or reading the text, but they do offer reinforcement and support. Students missing class will not be allowed to meet with a tutor during their regular class times.
  • As students revise drafts and work through papers, tutors may offer suggestions about any of the following:
    • The title, thesis statement, introduction, and conclusion
    • Focus (main idea, purpose, and narrowing topic)
    • Organization (arrangement of ideas and/or paragraph development)
    • Development (supporting details, examples, and explanation)
    • Style (sentence structure, and word choice)
    • Editing, proofreading skills, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and documentation

What NOT To Expect From A Tutoring Session

  • Tutors in The Learning Center will not edit papers for students. Tutors will assist students and teach them how to edit their own work.
  • Tutors will not do the work for you. Tutors will assist with your work, reinforce your learning, provide hints and suggestions for learning the material, and review with you, but they will not replace individual work by the student.
  • Tutors will not “cram” with you. The Learning Center does not advocate cramming without properly studying on the part of the student well before testing.
  • Tutoring will not necessarily result in perfect work, and it does not guarantee an A.
  • Tutors will not write a student’s essay.  Nor will they do the work for the student. The tutor’s job is to answer questions and make suggestions, but the work should be the student’s own.
  • Tutors will not perform under an unreasonable time limit because you have waited until too late to work on an assignment. It is your responsibility to seek help well before the assignment is due.
  • Tutors will not wait more than 15 minutes for students who are late for scheduled sessions. It is the tutor’s discretion to wait longer. Students are expected to be on time, if not early, for tutoring sessions. Failure to show up for more than two scheduled sessions may result in loss of tutoring privileges for the remainder of the semester or the academic year.
