Suicide Prevention Awareness Event at RCC 9/28

The counseling and career services at Robeson Community College will host a Suicide Prevention Awareness event tomorrow, September 28 in partnership with Eastpointe.

“September is the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month,” said Susan Moore, counselor and disabilities coordinator at RCC. “Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and can be 100% preventable.”

More than 10.3% of Americans have reported that they have thought about suicide. On average, there are 132 suicides each day in the United States alone.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention., a crisis mental health hotline has seen an 891% spike in calls since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Prevention is key and knowing the warning signs below can help save a life:

  • Dramatic Change in mood
  • Giving Treasured Possessions Away
  • No Longer Taking Part in Activities, once Enjoyed
  • Depression
  • Feeling Life Is Not Worth Living
  • Sleeping too Little or Too Much
  • Talking About Wanting to Die
  • Feeling Isolated
  • Severe Grief or Loss

The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., outside, between buildings 13 and 14. The Student Government Association will provide refreshments. Everyone is invited to attend.
