Special credit students uncover NC gem: RCC

Throughout North Carolina, students everywhere are discovering the quality, affordable education that’s available at Robeson Community College. For the academic year 2021-2022, RCC served curriculum students in over 30 counties throughout the state, many of which were special credit students, like Alexis Green (pictured on right) from Brunswick County.

“Robeson Community College was the only community college that had the class I needed at the time,” said Alexis, who enrolled in a criminal justice course at the college. “I really liked it; the teachers were really good.”

Alexis plans on transferring to North Carolina Central University, and it was that one class at RCC that helped fill in the gap, making her next steps possible.

“I plan on completing law school,” said Alexis.

Alexis wants to become a lawyer for the Army, and after completing NCCU, she says she’ll have the qualification to be considered a commissioned officer with a rank of L3.

“I did ROTC in high school and I always wanted to become a lawyer, so I just put two and two together.”

Without becoming a special credit student at RCC, Alexis would have had to wait to take the course, delaying the pursuit of her dreams.

Special credit students are individuals who are accepted to Robeson Community College under special provision that allows them to take up to twelve semester hours of credit courses before completing all admission requirements. Prior to registering for any additional hours beyond the twelve semester hours students must declare a major and complete all admission requirements.

Special credit students can take classes on campus or completely online.

For special credit student John Mitchell, a resident of Chatham County, online classes at Robeson Community College were the best option.

“RCC just had all the classes I needed and it was a lot easier to apply to RCC compared to other community colleges,” said John.

The classes John took offered convenience and flexibility, which was something he needed to fit his schedule, as he majors in creative writing with a minor in film at NC State University.

“I’ve really enjoyed them, they were challenging, but I had a great time doing them… I learned a lot.”

Also taking classes from NC State last semester was David Grimm. David is majoring in professional golf management at NCSU and is from Concord.

“I finished in the spring as a special credit student,” said David, who completed 6 credits over two semesters. “They were online classes that I used to transfer to the program at NC State.”

David says the application process at Robeson Community College was easy and that the classes helped him in furthering his education.

“It was great, it ran pretty smoothly,” said David. “The instructors were good, they kept you updated.”

Sheila Walker, a resident of Cleveland County, echoed those statements.

“The application process was easy,” said Sheila.

“I only took one class,” said Sheila. “It was an English class and it was completely online, it was the one class that I needed.”
