Sammy Cox recognized for service on RCC Board of Trustees

The Robeson Community College Board of Trustees adopted a resolution earlier this month to recognize Samuel L. Cox for his “unselfish and responsible role” in serving RCC during his 21-year tenure as board of trustee member.

The celebration to honor Cox was held during a board meeting on May 9 in which current Board Chair, Shirley Stockton, read a resolution in acknowledgement of Cox’s extraordinary service.

Cox served on the Board as a trustee for 21 years, from July 1999 to October 2020, and was elected as chair in July 2015. He served in that capacity for 5 years until passing the gavel in October 2020.

During the resolution, it was stated that Cox showed “great financial generosity to the College, establishing the Sammy and Onita Cox Endowed Scholarship in 1998 as well as supporting many events sponsored by Robeson Community College, donating to the Basic Law Enforcement Training program housed in Building 11, which now bears the name Sammy Cox Law Enforcement Center.”

Stockton stated that Cox was a “diligent and faithful Board member, giving of his time and effort to attend meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, and retreats on governance and policy at the local, state, and national levels.”

During his time as a trustee, Cox also served for 12 years in the Lions Club, serving as president for three terms and treasurer for three terms.

Prior to serving on the board, Cox taught in the BLET program at RCC, a program he graduated from in 1975.

Although no longer a member of the Board of Trustees, Sammy visits the RCC campus often and still takes part in events and activities, showing his love and dedication for the college and its students has not stopped; and if you asked him, he would probably say, it never will.
