RCC expands offerings for law enforcement; offers homicide investigation

Robeson Community College is expanding its training portfolio for sworn law enforcement officers. This month, police, detectives, agents, and investigators will have an opportunity to enroll in Death and Homicide Investigation training offered at the school.

Death and Homicide Investigation is a 40 hours long course and provides insight into the different types of natural, accidental, suicidal and homicidal deaths that officers may encounter, along with identifying proven investigation strategies for each type of case. Officers will learn a systematic process for handling the crime scene from the initial approach through scene documentation and evidence collection.

“This course is only for sworn law enforcement officers who work primarily in an investigative capacity,” stated Lee Hinson, director of law enforcement continuing education programs. “This is a necessary course for new detectives and seasoned detectives to learn/refresh new techniques on a very sensitive and important type of investigation.”

During the class, officers will get to see how the latest technology and forensic sciences can be used to assist in an investigation. Different motivators for murder will be identified and compared to case examples. Also, follow-up investigative procedure and techniques will be identified.

The Death and Homicide Investigation training will be held August 22 – August 26 on the main campus in Lumberton. Instruction will be provided by BlueLine Training Group, LLC. There is no cost for sworn law enforcement officers to enroll.

Other training available for members of the law enforcement community includes

  • Narcotics Investigation for Patrol, from September 27-September 28
  • Child Abuse and Fatality Investigation from October 4 – October 5
  • Crime Scene Investigation from October 26 – October 28;
  • Interview & Interrogation from November 14 – November 18
  • K-9 Legal Update, a one-day workshop that will be held November 22

Officers who would like to enroll in one of the above courses should contact Pete Monteiro, the law enforcement training coordinator, at 910-272-3502 or let@robeson.edu.
