PreCollege Mathematics

Welcome to the Pre-College Mathematics website

The Pre-College Mathematics program at Robeson Community College is designed to prepare students for college-level coursework by helping them develop the mathematics skills required for entry in their gateway mathematics courses. The gateway math course depends on the program major you have selected. The gateway math courses are MAT 110, MAT 143, MAT 152, MAT 171 and MAT 271. The number of pre-college courses needed vary because each gateway math course has a different set of course prerequisites.

How to be Successful in Pre-College Math

Pre-College math course success is at your fingertips if you do the following:

  • Work outside of scheduled class time
    • Many students falsely believe that attending scheduled class time is all they have to do to pass the course. NOT TRUE! Students must work outside of class.
  • Attend Class Regularly
    • Recall the institution has an attendance policy and students are dropped regardless of their course grade if they exceed 15% absences. Scheduled class time is valuable time with your instructor – valuable time with your peers – if you have questions and need answers, scheduled class time allows that to happen
  • Communicate with your Instructor
    • Math faculty hear this from their students often, “I didn’t know I had to take the quiz or exam or show my work, etc.” If you are unclear on what to do or when to do it – Ask your instructor in class, send an email to your instructor or make an appointment to meet with your instructor.

Pre-College Math Courses

Pre-College Math provides students with the basic math skills required for success in gateway math courses. To prepare students most effectively, the pre-college math courses have been organized into modules. Each module focuses on a specific area of knowledge.

The developmental math modules that make up the development math shells are listed below:

DMA 010 – Operations with Integers

DMA 020 – Fractions and Decimals

DMA 030 – Proportions/Ratios/Rates/Percents

DMA 040 – Expressions, Linear Equations, Linear Inequalities

DMA 050 – Graphs and Equations of Lines

DMA 065—Algebra for PreCalculus

Pre-College Math Shells [Developmental Math Shells – DMS]

In order to allow students to complete just the modules they need at a pace that is appropriate for each individual, Robeson Community College offers shell courses for Pre-College math.

The DMS shell is a course and students complete DMA modules within a DMS shell course. DMS 003, 002 and 001 are offered in 8 and 16 week sessions. Students are scheduled to meet face-to-face and complete required online activities using MyLabsPlus. Pre-College mathematics will utilize the modularization concept. Students who demonstrate mastery of a module will advance to the next module, allowing them to work at a flexible pace.

Precollege Shell Course Name

Credit

Scheduled

Purpose

DMS 003

3

16 wks

Holds any ONE DMA

DMS 002

2

16 wks

Holds any TWO DMA’s

DMS 001

1

8wks

Holds any THREE DMA’s

The last number of the course indicates the credit hour, and the number of modules a student must successfully complete in order to receive a grade of “P”.

In some cases, students may not meet the minimum NC DAP scores to place into the DMA modules. If a student scores a 0 or 1 on the NC DAP for DMA 010 and does not score 7 or higher on any other module, the student is required to register and successfully complete MAT 050 prior to enrolling into a Developmental Math Shell course. In order to successfully pass MAT 050, a student must earn a grade of “80” or higher or score “2” or higher on their retest of DMA 010 on the NC DAP.

MAT 050 Basic Math Skills

This course is designed to strengthen basic math skills. Topics include properties, rounding, estimating, comparing, converting, and computing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Upon completion, students should be able to perform basic computations and solve relevant mathematical problems.
