Information Session for Medical Sonography set for July 11

Robeson Community College will hold an information session for prospective students who are interested in enrolling in the new medical sonography program.  The information session will be held on Monday, July 11 in the Truist Room located in Workforce Development Center/Building 18 on the main campus in Lumberton. Two sessions will be held, the first at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 6:00 p.m.

The medical sonography is scheduled to begin in Spring 2023, pending approval from SACSCOC, the regional accrediting body for RCC, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

Advisors from the program will provide information about fall registration, hand out application packets for the program, and answer questions about the admissions process into the program and financial aid.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for medical sonographers is expected to increase 19% by 2030. The increase is being driven by an aging baby-boomer population which will need medical sonographers to diagnose medical conditions such as blood clots and heart disease.

In May 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the median salary for sonographers was $75,920.

“We are looking forward to adding another academic program that will greatly aid our community and be a rewarding career choice for prospective students and those looking for a career change,” stated Dr. Patrena Benton Elliott, the Vice President of Instruction and Student Services, as she received news of the program’s approval from the North Carolina Community College System in February. “Students interested can begin completing their general education classes in anticipation of potentially enrolling in January 2023, pending approval of SACSCOC, of course.”

For more information about the medical sonography program, students are asked to contact Lindsey Norris, sonography program director, at 910-272-3351 or lnorris@robeson.edu.
