Chair’s Blog–April Wrap-Up

April serves as Poetry Month. For the third year, RCC’s English Department has hosted a poetry contest and poetry reading event. On April 29, winning student and faculty submissions were read to an audience.

The audience also had an opportunity to listen to poetry from guest speaker, Dr. Deborah Watkins. Her book of poems titled Seasoned with His Love contains inspirational poems and prose.  She has also written a series of children’s books for beginning readers and tutors students within the Durham Public School system.  Being a two time survivor of Breast Cancer, she is a member of the Sisters Network Triangle, which is an African American Breast Cancer support group.  Being so committed to her community and support group, Dr. Watkins, donates part of her proceeds from her book sales to the African American Breast Cancer group and to the newly established The Gift of Knowledge Academy
