Effective Teacher Training Class at RCC the Largest Class Ever

The Effective Teacher Training class at Robeson Community College is the largest class to date.  Currently, 21 students have signed up for the class, and they are scheduled to complete the training tomorrow at 5:00 pm.

Effective Teacher Training is a 36-hour course that is required for substitute teachers in the State of North Carolina, an occupation which has seen shortages across the United States.  The Public Schools of Robeson County requires that a certificate of completion of the 36-hour ETT course accompany an individual’s application when applying for a substitute teacher or a teaching assistant position.

Robeson Community College offers two delivery options for students, an online/hybrid option and face-to-face classes during the day. The college had to add sections of the class due to demand from the community.

The program has seen major success this semester, in addition to enrolling a record number of students, the program has also enabled some completers to become full-time teachers.

“We had a young man that completed the class on September 30, 2021. He went to PSRC on October 1st and was offered a full-time position teaching Social Studies at Red Springs Middle School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in History and will begin working for PSRC,” said Julie Baxley, Director of Human Resource Development/Workforce Solutions at RCC.

Substitutes with a teaching license can make a minimum of $103 per day and unlicensed subs can make a minimum of $80 per day, according to the North Carolina Public Schools Salary Manual. Anyone that is interested in becoming a substitute teacher and taking the training, there are several other opportunities available this semester, including:
