Robeson Regional Biotech Education Consortium (RRBEC) Goals & Objectives

 

What is the RRBEC?

The RRBEC is a partnership between Robeson Community College, UNC Pembroke and the Public Schools of Robeson County to increase the number of students in the biotechnology field by providing training and professional development for area high school teachers, improving biotechnology curriculum at the post-secondary level and providing internships for students.

Mission State:  Helping to Bridge the Biotechnology Gap

Funding for the RRBEC is made possible by a three year grant from the National Science Foundation. NSF is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research across all fields of science and engineering, with an annual budget of $5.8 billion.

 

 

Project Goals

Improve the technical and pedagogical skills of educators charged with teaching secondary and post-secondary students in southeastern North Carolina.
Adapt and enhance the biotechnology curriculum of Robeson Community College resulting in well-prepared technicians and articulation with The University of North Carolina at Pembroke biotechnology baccalaureate program.
Increase the number of technicians and researchers in the field of agricultural biotechnology.
Partnered with local agricultural extension office to offer outreach workshops and seminars to local farming community.

Project Objectives

Provide workshops for secondary school teachers incorporating hands-on techniques for inclusion in the classroom.
Provide each participating secondary school teacher  a classroom kit for lab instruction.
Internships for college students within local and regional industry as well as in secondary school classrooms and University laboratories.
Seminars and workshops for university and community college faculty throughout the state.
Workshops for agricultural professionals to obtain input into instruction.

Project Impact

Provided over 100 hours of professional development instruction to over 35 public school teachers
Data indicates that more than 600 public school students have been impacted by project workshop and activities.
Provided internships to 20 college students
Hosted RCC’s first biotechnology forum showcasing student interns research projects.
