RCC Student Support Services Holds Annual Banquet

LUMBERTON, NC (April 28, 2008) — The 3rd Annual RCC Student Support Services (SSS) Banquet was held in the A.D. Lewis Auditorium on April 28, 2008 with thirty seven students and five staff members attending. The banquet allows SSS staff members to honor students that have demonstrated exceptional participation in the program modules and honor the student chosen to receive the Directors Award for the highest GPA during the academic year.

The recipient of this year's SSS Director's Award, Paula Bissett, was also honored at the UNC Pembroke Business Visions banquet where she received the RCC Business Student of the Year award. Bissett holds a 4.0 GPA and will be one of the many graduates crossing the stage at the RCC curriculum graduation ceremony on May 15.

“The students really look forward to the banquet each year,” said Jennifer McLean, SSS director. “Many of our program participants are non-traditional students and to receive recognition for their efforts is extremely rewarding for them,” added McLean.

Program tutors, both professional and peer, along with members of student organization Students Helping Other People (SHOP), were also recognized at the banquet for their efforts in helping the SSS wrap up another successful academic year.

The RCC TRIO Student Support Services is a five-year federally funded program sponsored by the US Department of Education to provide services to 160 eligible college students. The program is designed to enrich student life academically, culturally, and socially to ensure a supportive environment for students adjusting to college life. The SSS staff provides students that are accepted in to the program, with services that include counseling, advisement, tutoring, career development and financial aid assistance.
