English as a Second Language

Mission Statement
In support of the mission of Robeson Community College, it is the mission of the English as a Second Language department to provide the local community of English language learners with high quality English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and orientation in U.S. culture. Through this program, English language learners will acquire language skills needed for their personal, social, academic and career goals.
 
To achieve this mission, ESL program pursues the following goals:
  1. Students will acquire daily functioning knowledge of speaking, listening, reading and writing the English language.
  2. Increase in student confidence in daily functioning within the larger community.
  3. Assimilation into the culture of the community
  4. Knowledge acquired at the most advanced level will give English language learners the ability to transition to higher levels of education and achieve greater career success.

Prerequisites for Admission

  • Adults 18 years or older. (Minors 16 and 17 years old meeting RCC criteria may be enrolled if they meet certain guidelines.)
  • All students must attend orientation to register for classes
  • All ESL students will be pre-tested with a standardized CASAS assessment. The results of the testing will determine placement into one of 3 levels:
    • Beginning
    • Intermediate
    • Advanced
 
Please see Orientation Schedule for dates and times of orientation. There are several class sites to choose from for daytime and night classes.  Classes are held at the following sites:
  • St. Pauls
  • Red Springs
  • Main Campus in Lumberton
