Online Checklists

Use the checklist to ensure that all of the suggested items are completed and that you are prepared for the online or hybrid course.

One to Two Weeks Prior to Class

  • Update your computer with the required hardware and software. Review the software requirement list for specifics concerning each online and hybrid course.
  • Ensure that your privacy settings are not set too high or too low.
  • Update your antivirus software.
  • Prepare your web browser. Ensure that your browser meets the minimum requirements (Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher). Turn off your pop-up blocker. Set your browser to accept all cookies.
  • Become familiar with the word processing program required for your class. Most instructors require Microsoft Word. If you are unfamiliar with Word, purchase it and practice before class starts. Microsoft Word (part of Microsoft Office) can be purchased from the RCC Bookstore in Building 9.
  • Refine your e-mail skills. Review how to send e-mail and to attach a file. Practice with friends and family. All RCC students are assigned an e-mail address through Campus Cruiser. You are required to use that account to correspond with your online/hybrid instructor.
  • Notify the RCC Counseling and Testing Office of a disability and provide the counselor with the necessary documentation.
  • Check your e-mail on a regular basis. Read all introductory mail or e-mail sent to your home or e-mail account. Instructors as well as the distance learning coordinator will send you course-related information.
  • Purchase your textbooks and other course material. Contact the RCC Bookstore regarding shipment of your books. If you receive financial aid, you will purchase your textbooks the first day of class.

Three to Two Days Prior to Class

  • Learn Blackboard. Review the online orientation. The orientation is a Windows Media File. A face-to-face orientation may also be available. Check your e-mail for updated information or contact the Distance Learning Coordinator regarding the time and location. New students are required to complete the orientation (online or face-to-face). However, even experienced Blackboard users may find the orientation to be helpful.
  • Review your registration form for the start date of your online course. A hybrid course, noted with HY, in the course prefix (BUS 228-HY) will have a face-to-face meeting on campus first. You must attend the face-to-face meetings.

First Day of Class

  • Check if you can access Blackboard and Campus Cruiser. Read all of the announcements. If your username and password do not work, contact the network administrator: ccox@robeson.cc.nc.us
  • Read the course syllabus. Print a copy so that you can have it for future reference. Become familiar with the course objectives, evaluation methods, and guidelines.
  • Contact your instructor if you have any questions.
  • Confirm your enrollment in the course. Once the semester begins, you must contact the course instructor prior to the fifth consecutive day of class or be dropped from the course.
  • Contact must be in the form of either an e-mail and/or completion of the first week’s assignment. The instructor’s syllabus will specify the type of contact to be made.
